The Bowling Green is situated between the Pavilion and London Road, hiding behind a substantial hedge. Use of it is shared by two clubs – Leicester Visually Impaired Bowling Club and Leicester Croquet Club – both of which play between April and October. The clubs share a large Club Room in the Pavilion, where they also have their own catering facilities and equipment storage.
Leicester Visually Impaired Bowling Club caters for bowlers whose sight is failing. Some members are assisted by a sighted guide. They play friendly matches against many of the sighted clubs in the Leicester area. If you think this is for you (or a friend), contact Kevin Bowman (tel. 07986 906008) for details. New members will need to be able to find their way to the club or to have a guide to take them. Equipment can be provided for new players.
Leicester Croquet Club has regular playing sessions on Sunday afternoons and Monday and Thursday evenings. Coaching is provided for newcomers to the game and club teams compete in various East Midlands leagues. Flat-soled shoes (no heels) are required but all other equipment is provided. More details are available at www.leicestercroquet.org.uk and you can ask David Bell (tel. 07979 770551) or Josie Tolton (tel. 0116 2835042) to know more.
