This is your chance to make a difference on the park!
The council is moving the lower play area on Victoria Park from its current position near the new health centre to the middle field between the two paths from Queen’s Road.
When the new play area opens, with new equipment, the old one will be closed and the play equipment removed. We think the site of the old play area, enclosed by railings, offers an opportunity to create something new on the park. The council has agreed to leave the railings in place and has given us some time to get support for proposals and plans for a new use for the area.
Have your say
We would like to hear ideas from individuals or community groups about how this area can be used for the benefit of local people. But we need more than the idea, because that’s the easy bit. The harder part is knowing how to make it happen, and keep it going over time – so we need to hear what you would do about those things as well. It’s not easy, but it’s a great opportunity to create something new on the park.
We’ve had some suggestions which include an exercise area for dogs, an enclosed teaching area for children from local schools, an area equipped for the young people who already congregate in that area of the park, or a community based area in which things can be grown. You could think about how to take any of these further, or come up with suggestions and plans of your own.
In thinking about this you need to be aware that parks budgets are now so stretched they cannot commit to the long term care and maintenance of additional facilities on the parks. Staff are being lost and existing maintenance reduced. And if we cannot offer them a workable alternative the railings will be removed and the area converted back to grass and open parkland. We think there are better uses for the area if we can offer them a practical alternative. So let us know what you think, and what plans you can come up with.
If it helps, have a chat with us and we will do what we can to help you develop your ideas. But don’t leave it too long. Contact us before the end of July at email@example.com and we will get back to you.
